There's nothing fall cannot tell you

when you've smelled the cold on the wind

and seen the days grow dark around you;

when you've heard that soft caress, a summer breeze,

turn to rasping scuttles of dead leaves,

skeleton hands that scratch from in the door to memory.

When stripped trees show all but winter,

bare black tangles on the mountain side,

you take that with you

even long into the city.
